CONTEST RULES

ELIGIBILITY:The contest is open to all ages, youth (age 14 or under), individuals (age 15 and up), families, organizations, or businesses. One entry per person or group. Youth entries may involve some construction help by an adult, but the overall design and most of the work should be by the child.

TYPES OF SCARECROWS:Scarecrows may either be Traditional style farm and garden scarecrows or they may be Spooky, Whimsical, Humorous or based on Historical, Fictional, Fairytale Characters, Occupations or Celebrities. (Be sure faces are weatherproof—see below.) Scarecrows are for public display and should meet reasonable community standards for good taste. The Office of Tourism reserves the right to disallow entries that are deemed inappropriate.

ENTRY CATEGORIES: Scarecrows will be judged on overall appearance, creativity and workmanship. Prizes will be awarded to the top entries for youth (age 14 or under), Individual (age 15 and up) and families. Organizations and businesses are not eligible for prizes.

ENTRIES BY GROUPS OR BUSINESSES: Scarecrows created by organizations or businesses may include a weatherproof sign identifying the group or business. The sign should be securely attached to the scarecrow and may not exceed 11 inches by 17 inches in size. Organizations and businesses are not eligible for prizes.

JUDGING: Judging will take place during the Farmers Market on Sunday, October 13, 2013, between 1:00 and 4:00 p.m. Entrants do not need to be present to win.

PRIZES: Winners will receive prize packages donated by local merchants.

CONSTRUCTION: All scarecrows must be homemade. Faces may not be commercial rubber or plastic masks or commercially manufactured. Some commercial costume pieces may be used sparingly, but should not make up the majority of the scarecrow’s outfit. Because scarecrows will be on display outdoors for more than two weeks, they must be durable and able to withstand sun, wind and rain. If papier-mâché is used be sure it is sealed and weatherproof. Decorations and accessories must be firmly attached. It is suggested that a length of 1”x3” or 2”x3” lumber be used to support the main body. The Office of Tourism will provide supports for standing scarecrows. If scarecrows are seated, entrants must provide the seat and a method of securing it to prevent tipping. The Office of Tourism may remove scarecrows that do not stand up to the weather.

SIZE: Standing scarecrows should be at least 5 feet tall and no more than 8 feet tall, not counting a hat. Seated scarecrows should be roughly to human scale.

DROP OFF: Scarecrows must be brought to the Fairhaven Visitors Center at the Academy Building, 141 Main Street, on Saturday, October 12, 2013, between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. during the Office of Tourism’s Harvest Fun Day.
